Neolithic Juggernaut: Tales of urban tribalism. [09 Jan 2007|12:48pm]

I've decided I want to start knapping stone. Since I have a habit of wanting to use waste materials for things like that, I'm lucky I ran across this:

From Beer Bottle to Arrowhead

I'm thinking I want to make my own found art atlatl. River cane is pretty abundant, but I really don't want to wait the several months it takes to dry before experimenting. I was thinking of using short lengths of scavenged pvc and glued connectors to mimic the reed's flexibility. Without the connectors, the piping will be too floppy at the lengths I want to use. It'll at least give me an idea on where my tolerances are when it comes time to straighten dried river cane.

Opportunities for artists! [07 Jan 2007|02:38pm]

I was hoping to submit some writing to literary journal Barrelhouse, but it looks like they aren't taking submissions for writing.

They are, however, taking submissions for art.

This might be a good opportunity for you, so I thought I'd pass it along.

Calling all artists and writers! It's a New Year's Cleaning! [01 Jan 2007|04:57pm]

[ mood | busy ]

Hello, everyone! Happy New Year!

Those who know me know that I'm a writer, and consequently a reader as well. I am in the process of simplifying, cleaning up, rearranging, and otherwise getting my space (and my life) in order. I have a LOT of magazines, papers, and other things that I need to get rid of, but I would like to see if any of you fine artists out there can use any of it before I go tossing it all away.

I have a range of magazines, everything from our local weekly alternatives (newsprint) all the way up to glossy magazines. (If you want to know what issues, just ask). I think I also have a big collection of old Writer's Digest magazines laying around, so if any of you are writers, aspiring or professional, let me know.

I may have to ask that you help out by paying for shipping, but I'll use the media mail option, which should make things pretty cheap. I also have some postcards, as well as the front "covers" of some Christmas cards. All of it is yours for the taking, if you need any of it for art or paper craft.

Leave a comment if you're interested, and do it fast - whatever isn't snapped up gets tossed by Friday!

It's official! [30 Dec 2006|07:33pm]

coterie_diaries has been resurrected and repurposed, and now it's ready to go!

The community layout and design (which was generously donated by jou back in the day) has not changed just yet. I don't know if I will do that or not - on one hand, I would like to give the place a new look to celebrate its new life, but I also don't want to discount the time and energy jou put into the initial design, either. I suppose time will tell, or something.

For now, the community is ready to accept new members and head into its new direction, so go ahead and check out the profile, join, have fun, and tell all of your friends. I'm interested in seeing who shows up and where things will go from here.

Thanks to both current and new members for their support, and thanks to teaandbitchery for giving me the idea in the first place. Now, grab your beverage of choice and join the fun!

*Brushes off the Dust* [19 May 2005|07:17pm]

Wow, ok, it's been a while. I had started a writing project close to a year ago, but abandoned it due to some crap that was going on in my life. Now I feel more recharged and finally finished a post that was on private due to incompleteness, and I typed up a whole new entry. Work has been extremely slow, so I've been working on it then. We'll see how it goes. Hopefully I can continue on this roll. Start at the bottom post and work your way up.

holy crap, someone's posting in here! [08 Oct 2004|12:26am]

[ mood | bored ]

It isn't really artsy, but I wanted to give you all a sample of what my writing used to be like, way back in college. Way back before I started to suck.

Anyway, enjoy a review about an art exhibit:

Art is Life at Kennedy Museum ExhibitCollapse )

Damn, I was really on my game the day I wrote this. I love it when I'm on my game...

And double points to those who spotted the X Japan reference.

Another poem [20 Jul 2004|12:50am]

[ mood | touched ]

Go to kiji_kat to see the very strange back story behind this one. For reasons I don't yet understand, it had to be written. I know it's probably an affront to all Good and Decent Poetry, but it's my affront, god dammit. Deal with it.

Time Spiral?Collapse )

Begin your scorn...now!

Random act of creativity on the horizon- please advise [17 Jul 2004|04:54pm]

[ mood | contemplative ]

jou's little HP fanart (One word? Two? -Editor) has rekindlied an idea that I've had kicking around for a while. It has the potential to be fun, and it'll give me an excuse to read the Harry Potter series again, but it also has the potential to turn out very, very badly.

Brace yourself, kids- I'm thinking about trying my hand at fanfiction (AAGH! -E).

You can blame the idea on my friend. He was with me the night that I was cleaning out my room and found a hat that I'd bought in Prague during high school. It's a long, dark green velvet hat with black accents and a tassle on the tip. It's floppy, almost like the long ski caps that you see in comics. Anyway, I was goofing around, and I put the hat on while wearing my glasses, and my friend said the infamous words:

"Oh my god, you look like a student teacher at Hogwarts. Wait...oh god, and those are Slytherin colors!"

So now, thanks to him, I have the burning desire to get yet another journal and use it to chronicle the adventures of a student teacher/TA at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. (Of course, now that I've posted this here, people who surf on in here will steal the idea, and they'll probably do a better job of it, too.) She'd most likely be an American, mostly because I don't know enough about England and/or Britian to write her as coming from there, but that's the only big, major oddity. It'll be fun to write about the events of the HP universe from a different perspective...

...unless, of course, you all see this and big red flags start going up, in which case I give you permission to tackle me and bind my hands in order to stop me from committing a Horrible Crime Against Fiction. We all know that my sense of good judgement is not so good, ("I wansumore plum wine. Can I pleeease have summore? Isso good..." *flop* "I'm sleepy...") so that's why I'm coming to you all. Suggestions?

Some people who are into creative writing may want to check this link out: http://www.livejournal.com/users/mistersleepless/22725.html?page=1#comments

It's a chance to have a short fiction piece posted on Warren Ellis's website, which is read by a SHIT TON of people. Anyone can do it, just be sure to follow the guidelines. It's due this Friday.

I'm gonna try to wrack my brains...

I found this contest on Deviant Art. I thought some of you more writing inclined types might be interested. You can get your story adapted into an off broadway play or a graphic novel that will be published online. It sounds pretty cool. Anyways, here's the link:

Bracing for the ridicule [02 Jun 2004|12:46am]

[ mood | exhausted ]

Apparently, the alchemists formula for getting me to write poetry is:

[Full moon + clouds + exhaustion] X Camui Gackt.

Against my better judgment, I'm actually going to type this thing up and post it here for you guys to read. Considering that the thing didn't really start to "come together" until I switched my playlist to an all-Gackt format, perhaps I should send it to him.

Seriously, I would like a critique from any of the English majors out there, as poetry isn't one of the core requirements in journalism school. I'm willing to bet that this sucks, and I'm used to harsh criticism in the form of uncontrollable laughter, so don't worry about hurting my feelings. I know I show little aptitude for poetry.

One note about the poetry I do attempt, though- unlike my articles, my poetry tends to be more about emotions and the feeling of "being there" than descriptions of actual events and/or experiences. I don't necessarily concentrate my efforts on the words in the sense of, "is this making a coherent, lucid journey from literary point A to literary point B?" It's more, "what do these words represent to me, and do they evoke the same feelings on the page that I'm feeling inside. Yes, I know, it's all gushy, but even us cynical journalists have to have an outlet.

Anyway, here it is. Cue snorts of derision.Collapse )

My first real attempt at fiction since high school [26 May 2004|12:59am]

[ mood | accomplished ]

I've had this story batting around in my head for a while, basically my answer to shadownex 's master work. I was thinking about it today when a little scene, complete with dialogue, popped into my head. I typed it out as best I could; what you are about to see is a very early rough draft. It's kid of written in an odd stream-of-consciousness/script style, so forgive the odd organization.

My characters don't have names yet, and are therefore referred to as "boy" and "girl". To make it easier to understand, "girl" is the main character from a world like our own, who is on a quest to find five mysterious things that, upon being given to a strange benefactor, will cause all of her dreams to come true. (I know that sounds cliche, but I'm exhausted. "Boy" is someone she's met on her travels through the dimensions; he's a rock star from a place where your appearance is changed by a mere thought and image is, literally, everything. However, looking beautiful and having it all comes at a rather high price (another cliche, I know. Shut up.)

Anyway, this dialogue will take place in the middle of the story, after a failed attempt by "girl" to collect one of the objects she needs. Angry and disgusted with herself, she proceeds to tear apart her room and smash a mirror in frustration. The dialogue begins after the outburst.

Before we start, I ask you all to be kind. This is my first official attempt at fiction in at least five years...

Also, forgive any spelling/grammar/punctuation errors. I'm sleepy.

Here there be dialogueCollapse )</span></p>

Tell me what you think, if you're so inclined. Also feel free to ask questions if you're totally lost...

First Project Post [24 May 2004|12:30am]

All right, it's technically Monday, so I'd best put up a link here to my writing project. But first, an explanation.

For a long time now, I've been interested in the concept of reincarnation and past lives, as are some of my friends. With the help of some of them, I've gotten information about some of my past lives, an important one named Kosuke, a minor samurai lord who lived in sixteenth century Japan. Based upon that, I wrote a short story for a creative writing class. Much of it is invention or very loosely based on actual events (most of the nameless narrator's scenes), but the "past lives" scenes just flowed. Some parts of those I would get stuck on, and just sit and meditate a bit, and then words that "felt right" would come, needing very little coaxing. I thought this was very interesting.....and the more I read up on recovering past life memories, the more I saw the merit in creative writing being a channel for them. So I wondered what would happen if Kosuke had a journal of his own....What would come out? I know the name, time, place, and some specific memories, so I have a starting point to use. It's also an excuse to do some creative writing as well, which I enjoy doing, I just need a kick in the butt. (:

If you're not down with the reincarnation angle and think it's a bunch of crap, it might help if you just read it as complete fiction, or as an alternate reality Japan. Please note that I have made no formal studies about that time period, or about Japan in general. A lot of the info I've gotten comes from Japanophile friends of mine. So any inaccuracies (either cultural, historical, linguistic, etc) are entirely my fault. I view this as an excercise and an experiment. I'll be having fun with this, trying not to freak out about making it accurate, and relying on intuition and stream of consciousness to see what comes out.

I'll try to update three times a week, but two seems more realistic and more likely to happen. I'm interested to see where this goes, as I've got no plans or outlines. (I'm planning on making the site more pretty as well.) So, without further ado, here's the first entry to Swords, Sake, and Women.
